Updated features within the Victorian Flatbush Map on MaryKayG.com

The Victorian Flatbush Map has been updated on MaryKayG.com with new Google Maps integration. The map is still the same, but now when you click on each number within the shaded area it takes you to an aerial view map of each sub-neighborhood. Each name and specific boundary was created by the individual developers who were responsible for building each neighborhood in the early 1900's.

The Marine Park Brief

Sun rise over the Marine Park Golf course in Brooklyn - by Peter Paulding
The NY Daily News reports the Marine Park Golf Course must close next month -
"...following allegations and legal wrangling over alleged mob ties. But Parks Department officials vowed the 18-hole course would remain open while they look for a new company to run it. The changes come after months of uncertainty at the public golf course following questions raised by Controller William Thompson in January linking operator Domenick Logozzo to a reputed Colombo crime family soldier. Logozzo sued the city last spring for canceling his 20-year, $10 million contract over the allegations, which he disputes." continue reading...
Thankfully, the temperatures have dropped in recent days so this decision will not affect most golfers handicap this season. On my last trip to Marine Park the course was in great shape and really is the best golf course in New York City. The driving range is not far from completion and the new practice area along with the course were in heavy use. Hopefully, a legitimate company that has experience operating golf courses in addition to the pro shop and bar/restaurant is found before next season.

CAMBA receives $1.3 million in funds from the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

Flatbush Life 10/25 -

A Brooklyn non-profit community based organization (CBO) was recently awarded over $1 million in federal funds to help low-income HIV/AIDS patients.

The Church Avenue Merchants Block Association (CAMBA), 1720 Church Avenue, received the $1.3 million in funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer their Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program.

“Having a stable home can make all the difference in staying healthy and living with this disease,” said HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson in awarding the money.

CAMBA Executive Director Joanne Oplustil said the money, which will go toward three years of programs, is a continuation of funding for the same program the CBO has been doing for several years. continue reading...

Sufjan Stevens and "The BQE"

Kensington based folk-indie rocker Sufjan Stevens is performing his half-hour-long music-and-video composition entitled "The BQE" described as a "symphonic and cinematic exploration of New York City's infamous Brooklyn-Queens Expressway." "The BQE" will premiere at BAM starting on November 1st for 3 nights.

Further along in the interview Sufjan sounds like a local real estate broker touting the uniqueness of Cortelyou Road...

GO: Speaking of parties, how do you like living in Kensington?

SS: I like it a lot because it’s remote and … it’s extremely diverse. I think Cortelyou Road is one of the most diverse streets in the entire country. There’s no consensus in terms of the ethnicity and the kinds of people who live there, it’s so mixed. There are little boutique shops coming in and some great restaurants — you should go to The Farm [on Adderley]. It’s two blocks down on Cortelyou. That’s the place to be; it’s really good food.

Let's sign him up....

Zee Tasty "Trans-Fat Free" Treat in Beverly Square West

From Brooklyn!! - Fall 2007

Brooklyn's own Z Crackers is a family affair. Pam and Keith Pollack are a husband and wife team whose first venture was pizza. One day they rolled the dough out thin, cut it into pieces and, as Keith says, "cooked the heck out of them." And snap! -Z Crackers were born.

The new snack took the Silver Award in Outstanding Cracker category of 2001's Fancy Food Show. Current Z Cracker varieties include red onion and rosemary, garlic and basil, and Kalamata olive. The secret of their great texture: a touch of corn meal.

Like the true family business that it is, the couple's inspirations were familial: to name the crackers, Keith was also influenced by his stepmother, who is French. (Her accent also helped create the slogan, "Z Crackers, Z Best.") Pam used her design skills to create the packaging and web site, and the company recently created Z Cookies, based on a much-loved mandlebrot recipe from Pam's grandmother. In fact the whole impetus behind the business was so that Pam and Kieth could spend quality time with their two daughters, now grown.

And like many family businesses they make sure the whole operation is nearby, the Pollacks live right around the corner from Beverly Square West bakery where the crackers are made. It's a small store that churns out about 20,000 crackers daily. The bakery is wholesale only, so look for Z Crackers and Cookies at store like Whole Foods, Fairway, Union Market, Sahadi's, David's Health Food and the Park Slope Food Coop. Zee best part? Z crackers have no trans fat!

Golfing in Brooklyn 101

With this recent nice weather summer may be almost over, but it is still golf season in Brooklyn.

The favorite course in Brooklyn is Marine Park which was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is a links course built off Jamaica Bay in the southern end of Brooklyn. The course at Marine Park is almost 7,000 yards, the longest in the city, and feels even longer with a constant in-your-face wind that blows off the bay. With the greens and fairway in great shape, the new management team has cleaned up the course adding a brand new pro shop along with new golf carts and a driving range is on the way. Twilight hours start after 4pm and you can play as many holes as you can fit it before it gets dark for $15 bucks, just don't forget the bug spray.

Marine Park Golf Course (718) 338-7100
2880 Flatbush Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11234
Directions: Belt Parkway to Exit 11N; Make left at 2nd light. Mass Transit: Take No. 2 or 5 train to Flatbush Ave. (last stop) then Q 35 bus.

The Dyker Heights Beach Golf Course is an 18-hole once private now city-owned public course next door to the the 46-acre Dyker Beach Park. Green fees are $17 for city residents and $25 for non-residents.

Dyker Heights Golf (718) 836-9722
86 7th Ave Brooklyn, NY 11217

Flushing Meadows Park Pitch & Putt is a cheap 18 hole par three golf course located next to Shea Stadium and the USTA in Queens. This course can be played with just a wedge and a putter and is a great for those just learning how to play or the pro who wants to tighten up the short game. The holes range from 40 to 80 yards and have lights for late night play with the last tee time at 11 p.m. Flushing Meadows also has an 18 hole miniature golf course (adults $6.50 children $5.00) and the cheapest hot dog, fries and Killians draft combo in the city for $4.50. 18 holes will cost you $10.50 during the day and $13 at night add an extra dollar on the weekends.

Directions from Brooklyn: Take the Belt Parkway East to VanWyck Expressway North to the Grand Central Parkway North. Exit at 9P. Follow Western Queens Directions.

Driving Ranges are located The Brooklyn Golf Center, Chelsea Piers and on Randall's Island and there is always Prospect Park.

Brooklyn's Flatbush - Battlefield to Ebbets Field

That's the truly inspired title of Brian Merlis and Lee Rosenzweig's tribute to the neighborhood they describe as "the heart, soul and spirit of Brooklyn." With well over 200 pages of photographs, maps, and illustrations documenting the evolution of Flatbush since the colonial era, it's a must have for anyone with even a passing interest in local history.

The book, as well as reprints from their fantastic photo library, can be ordered from the authors' website. It can also be purchased locally, at VOX POP.

On Prospect Park - When Does Beyonce Move In?

Not sure how everyone in Brooklyn feels about On Prospect Park but here are some photos taken on 8/23 from the backside of the building (the view for the people who don't pony up Beyonce money).

Hard to believe these condos will be less then a 10 minute bike ride from Victorian Flatbush, but it does look pretty frickin' cool once you get over the fact there is nothing else like it in the area.
