Monday Morning News
The Farm on Adderly gets some well deserved pop in The New Yorker this morning-
At the Farm on Adderley, in Ditmas Park, this means a relaxed, friendly atmosphere; it’s the kind of place where you can bring your yoga mat to dinner and not feel awkward. One Sunday evening, big tables held families with jostling children; nearby, two silver-haired women sipped glasses of scarlet-tinged rosé. The food is precise and unpretentious, served on mismatched china: a chilled cucumber-and-avocado soup, sea-foam green and laced with olive oil, had a tangy sweetness that was juxtaposed with a salty dollop of crab salad; the buffalo-mozzarella salad was a pleasing variation on the standard caprese, pairing green apple and arugula with soft, fresh cheese. The striped bass was laid over a pile of crisp vegetables—asparagus, radish, fava beans—and mussels, with pickled fennel offering a piquant jolt.Tables for Two: Flatbush Farm & the Farm on Adderley [The New Yorker]
Metro also features Kensington Blog author Jennifer Gannon talking about the changing demographics of the area.
Who’s moving in?
Basically it’s a lot of young couples and a lot of families. When we moved into my building it was like a nursing home but in just four years it has become full of young couples. At least five of the couples in the building are either pregnant or have just had a baby.

Update - Just when you thought you had heard enough about the Farm for the day the good reviews keep on coming. New York Magazine listed the Farm on it's Cheap Eats list for 2007.

Some restaurants are instantly embraced by their famished neighborhoods, and so it was when this casually rustic spot opened last summer in Ditmas Park, a corner of Brooklyn where the Victorian fixer-uppers attract the sort of Manhattan expats who expect to find Cowgirl Creamery’s Mt. Tam on the cheese plate and crispy tofu with sweet corn on the kids’ menu. And so they do at the Farm, where seasonal ingredients are duly worshipped in preparations like housemade fettuccine with peas and pea shoots, and bluefish with corn and okra. To the place’s credit, there is also a serene little garden, a nice long bar where the “local and organic” motto extends to some of the beer and wine, and a respectable English-muffin burger that’s overshadowed by its world-class fries.

Flatbush Family Network - Shopping Newkirk - What's Your Favorite
Subject: FW: [SPAM] Re: [FlatbushFamilyNetwork] Shopping Newkirk - What's Your Favorite?
On 4/16/07, fdcmarketing
Where do you shop at Newkirk Plaza?
And, what do you like to buy?
I'm new in the area and I have had a great time discovering all that
is new here - and on Cortelyou Road. One project in my new job at the
Flatbush Development Corporation is to find out what kind of shopping
and eating people do at Newkirk. I've been going into the stores and
restaurants and discovered so many great things. But it is the regular
customers who really know where to find the best of everything.
- Is it the stewed chicken at Fisherman's Cove?
- The earrings at Royal Market?
- The bargain designer eyewear at Veyana?
- The spinach pie at Cha's?
- Or, is it the fact that you can get a newspaper, fill a
prescription, buy fresh fish and pick out a good bottle of wine all at
a subway stop?
It would be great if you took a minute to respond with 2-3 of your
favorites shops and restaurants and what you like to buy there. Keep
it short if you like... just write whatever comes to mind. It'll be
interesting to see what everyone has to say.
I know many of you may want to respond with what new things you'd like
to see, and that's ok too. But the first thing I'm hoping to find out
and to let others know about, is all the great things already here -
right under our noses.
Thank you,
Phillip

Re: [FlatbushFamilyNetwork] Shopping Newkirk - What's Your Favorite?
I just moved here 2 months ago and was pleasantly surprised to find so much
so close to our house. I still don't know all the store names yet but I am
in the place next to Almac, with the fruit & veggies out front, 4 times a
week. They get fresh cannoli from Bay Ridge daily and let me tell you they
are way too good! They also have organic milk about $1 cheaper per half
gallon than the C-Town (?) on E 16th. Almac is a godsend. Period. The
bagels on Newkirk are, in my families opinion, not great but we were spoiled
living a block from Bagel World on Court St. We love Loduca Pizza, have
decided that Chinese place across the st from the big laundry place on
Newkirk rocks and can't stand that Duncan Donuts won't let customers use the
bathroom. Pisses me off to no end yet I still go there for coffee & ice
cream. It's also amazing that there are Two banks right there in the plaza.
The jerk chicken at Fisherman's Cove is phenomenal though not as good as
mine of course ;) I just wish they jerked chicken breasts; it's just legs
there. The deli at the corner where Almac is makes the most amazing warm
turkey sandwich; he chops up the turkey slices on the grill, on wheat with
swiss - yum. So that's it for now, still exploring! I need to find fresh
mozzarella closer than PPW, a really great place to get my shoes/boots
re-soled, shined etc. I'd also love to find a better butcher, with hanger
steak, more selection .. someone who will ask me how thick I want the steaks
cut.

Dine in Brooklyn - Restaurant Week Begins
Brooklyn's Restaurant Week begins for the 4th year throughout the borough with more than 175 restaurants serving three course dinners for only $21.12. Dine in Brooklyn serves as a wonderful opportunity for restaurant-lovers to experience Brooklyn's many outstanding restaurants.
Here in Ditmas Park, be sure to make your reservations at Picket Fence, which was chosen this year by The Post as one of the Top 10 Tables to try.
"Brooklyn is the borough that caters to tots, and Picket Fence aims to please parents and kids alike with family-friendly service and an open toy basket. Surrounded by the gorgeous Victorian homes that dominate the beautiful small-town setting of Ditmas Park, the bright yellow Picket Fence serves home-style favorites like smoked Gouda mac and cheese and buttermilk chicken."

Ditmas Park: New Center of the Food Universe?
Brooklyn's Ditmas Park, known primarily for its immense Victorian houses, may never be as hip as Red Hook. But, in a sea change reminiscent of Red Hook's Van Brunt Street, a cluster of new food ventures are springing up there along Courtelyou Road. The strip began its upswing last year with Picket Fence, whose kitchen we've praised as "disarmingly daring." This past summer, the Farm on Adderley, an equally ambitious restaurant with a first-class bar, opened. (They just began serving inventive brunch items on Sundays.)Now comes word that TB Ackerson Fine Wine Merchant will open a store, on November 1, specializing in organic and biodynamic wines at 1205 Cortelyou Road and that Park Slope candy shop–ice-cream parlor Rapper's Delight will move to Ditmas Park. There's no equivalent of Sunny's or Fairway in the neighborhood, but who's to say what the next year might bring?
