Zee Tasty "Trans-Fat Free" Treat in Beverly Square West
From Brooklyn!! - Fall 2007
Brooklyn's own Z Crackers is a family affair. Pam and Keith Pollack are a husband and wife team whose first venture was pizza. One day they rolled the dough out thin, cut it into pieces and, as Keith says, "cooked the heck out of them." And snap! -Z Crackers were born.
The new snack took the Silver Award in Outstanding Cracker category of 2001's Fancy Food Show. Current Z Cracker varieties include red onion and rosemary, garlic and basil, and Kalamata olive. The secret of their great texture: a touch of corn meal.
Like the true family business that it is, the couple's inspirations were familial: to name the crackers, Keith was also influenced by his stepmother, who is French. (Her accent also helped create the slogan, "Z Crackers, Z Best.") Pam used her design skills to create the packaging and web site, and the company recently created Z Cookies, based on a much-loved mandlebrot recipe from Pam's grandmother. In fact the whole impetus behind the business was so that Pam and Kieth could spend quality time with their two daughters, now grown.
And like many family businesses they make sure the whole operation is nearby, the Pollacks live right around the corner from Beverly Square West bakery where the crackers are made. It's a small store that churns out about 20,000 crackers daily. The bakery is wholesale only, so look for Z Crackers and Cookies at store like Whole Foods, Fairway, Union Market, Sahadi's, David's Health Food and the Park Slope Food Coop. Zee best part? Z crackers have no trans fat!

Flatbush Frolic - Sunday September 16th
From the Flatbush Family Network -
Hi Neighbors,
The Flatbush Frolic is coming this Sunday, September 16th from 11AM-5PM. There will be lots of vendors, rides, food, activities and entertainment by local talent.
Midwood Martial Arts & Family Fitness Center will be there with demonstrations and interactive activities for children and adults.
Look for young children's activities (including Juguemos A Cantar, Music for Aardvarks and Sign A Song) in the PS 139 schoolyard on Cortelyou Road between Argyle and Rugby Roads, right next to the library.
Older children and adults can play on Cortelyou Road between E17th and 18th Streets. There will be basketball hoops and you can sign up to take part in Capoeira, Gymnastics, Karate, and Kickboxing sessions. There will also be a Feldenkrais Method/Bones for Life Q & A session with our instructor, who is a licensed physical therapist.
If you or your child take classes with us you are welcome to help us present the demonstrations. Just let us know you are going to be there and we will include you or your little one in our plans.
FDC can still use some volunteers to assist with the Frolic. Please contact Mannix Gordon at FDC if you'd like to take part.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the Frolic!

Monday Morning News
The Farm on Adderly gets some well deserved pop in The New Yorker this morning-
At the Farm on Adderley, in Ditmas Park, this means a relaxed, friendly atmosphere; it’s the kind of place where you can bring your yoga mat to dinner and not feel awkward. One Sunday evening, big tables held families with jostling children; nearby, two silver-haired women sipped glasses of scarlet-tinged rosé. The food is precise and unpretentious, served on mismatched china: a chilled cucumber-and-avocado soup, sea-foam green and laced with olive oil, had a tangy sweetness that was juxtaposed with a salty dollop of crab salad; the buffalo-mozzarella salad was a pleasing variation on the standard caprese, pairing green apple and arugula with soft, fresh cheese. The striped bass was laid over a pile of crisp vegetables—asparagus, radish, fava beans—and mussels, with pickled fennel offering a piquant jolt.Tables for Two: Flatbush Farm & the Farm on Adderley [The New Yorker]
Metro also features Kensington Blog author Jennifer Gannon talking about the changing demographics of the area.
Who’s moving in?
Basically it’s a lot of young couples and a lot of families. When we moved into my building it was like a nursing home but in just four years it has become full of young couples. At least five of the couples in the building are either pregnant or have just had a baby.

Update - Just when you thought you had heard enough about the Farm for the day the good reviews keep on coming. New York Magazine listed the Farm on it's Cheap Eats list for 2007.

Some restaurants are instantly embraced by their famished neighborhoods, and so it was when this casually rustic spot opened last summer in Ditmas Park, a corner of Brooklyn where the Victorian fixer-uppers attract the sort of Manhattan expats who expect to find Cowgirl Creamery’s Mt. Tam on the cheese plate and crispy tofu with sweet corn on the kids’ menu. And so they do at the Farm, where seasonal ingredients are duly worshipped in preparations like housemade fettuccine with peas and pea shoots, and bluefish with corn and okra. To the place’s credit, there is also a serene little garden, a nice long bar where the “local and organic” motto extends to some of the beer and wine, and a respectable English-muffin burger that’s overshadowed by its world-class fries.

Changes on Cortleyou Road
With mixed emotions we heard the news from the Flatbush Family Network last week that the Associated will be sold to The Flatbush Food Co-op on Cortelyou Road. The Associated and it's owners Barry and Leon have been serving everyone in the neighborhood for over 30 years with friendly and exceptional service. The legendary neighborhood grocer will now provide an opportunity for the expansion of the Flatbush Food Co-op. Associated will be open until July 31st so be sure to stop by and give your regards to Leon and Barry. Everyone should keep there ears open for some type of send off party for the future.
Also earlier in the month, Ditmas Park Blog introduced everyone to the new owners of Picket Fence, Vipin and Rama Agarwal, formerly of Balduchi's. We wish the former owners, Graham and Chelsie Meyerson, our best on there new ventures.
