What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one facet of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points along the body. The study and practical application of Chinese medicine to treat pain and disease has been around for over 2500 years. Among the components of Traditional Chinese Medicine are herbal and nutritional therapy, exercise, meditation, acupuncture, and massage. The aim of Chinese medicine is to restore balance and allow the body to flourish.
What can Acupuncture treat?
For thousands of years Traditional Chinese medicine has treated a wide variety of disorders. Currently the World Heath Organization recognizes over forty conditions that are effectively treated with acupuncture. Some conditions include: asthma, allergies, addiction cessation, headaches, pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ syndrome, anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive complaints and female reproductive health issues including infertility, endometriosis, fibroids, cysts, PMS and irregular menses.
Ms. Axen will be conducting a free workshop entitled “Eating for the Seasons: a traditional approach to weight loss and improved energy” on October 21st at 2pm at Midwood Martial Arts. Forgotten NY Bedford Fellows - Part 1: Emmons to Beverly
Kevin Walsh of Forgotten NY features Victorian Flatbush within his latest neighborhood tour Bedford Fellows - Part 1: Emmons to Beverly.
North and NW of Flatbush Brooklyn consists of myriads of what used to be separate developments, wrought from the minds of visionary developers such as Dean Alvord, who purchased a parcel of land in Flatbush from the estate of Luther Voorhies and the Dutch Reformed Church in 1898. Alvord, with the aid of architect John Petit, set about building sumptuously-appointed buildings for the well-to-do. By 1898 Flatbush had evolved into a well-established community that boasted good schools, decent local transit (trolleys) and the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company offered easy transport to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge. Alvord’s idea was to extend Prospect Park South and adapt it to residential use. He foresightedly buried utility lines underground and paved the streets in an age when many were still dirt roads or Belgian-bricked. Streets were given British-sounding names, and brick fence posts bearing the interlocking Prospect Park South monogram can still be seen on many intersections.
Different developments such as Caton Park, Beverly Squares East and West, Ditmas Park and Ditmas Park West, Midwood Park and South Midwood, and Fiske Terrace developed around the same format.
Bedford Avenue traverses South Midwood for one block, between Farragut Road and Flatbush Avenue, and for one block, it attains glory.

House of the Day: 2787 Bedford Avenue - Brownstoner
Whatever your view on the desirability of the Brooklyn College area, the fact remains that there are some nice houses at decent prices to be found. This place on Bedford Avenue between Farragut and Glenwood doesn't have any eye-popping detail, but it's part of an attractive row of attached brick houses and looks to be in decent shape. We're not very familiar with this stretch of Bedford, however, so it's tough call for us. Has anyone been inside this place?

Midwood South
South Midwood was built by Real Estate Developers at the turn of the century. The land was purchased as large tracts from Dutch Families who had owned the farms in Flatbush. In 1901, the South Midwood Resident Association was founded, an organization that remains a vital force in the community today. In honor of the neighborhood’s centennial in 2001, the City Council restored the original names of South Midwood’s tree-lined streets: Kenmore Place (East 21st Street), Elmore Place (East 22nd Street), Delamere Place (East 23rd Street) and Mansfield Place (East 24th Street). Names with "Sense and Sensibility."
South Midwood, like other Victorian Flatbush neighborhoods, offers urban convenience and suburban spaciousness. A vigorous Neighborhood Association meets regularly, offering residents the opportunity to share experiences and ideas. It sponsors a large community garden (located on the Brooklyn College grounds, adjacent to the Athletic field), organizes a tour of homeowners gardens in spring. The owners of the approximately 400 homes that make up South Midwood reflect the diversity of origin and lifestyle that make it a dynamic destination.
For information about the neighborhood today, please contact the South Midwood Association President: Warren Dingott, 718.859.2510.
